Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts. Studied under the late Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. Winner of the Besançon Conducting Competition in 1989.
He has been a guest conductor with many of Europe's leading orchestras, including the Orchestre de Paris, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He will serve as Music Director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra, which represents Austria and has a history of over 110 years, for 10 years until June 2025, after which he will become the orchestra's honorary conductor. In Japan, he has served Music Director New Japan Philharmonic, artistic director of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center, Chief conductor of the Siena Wind Orchestra, and general director of the Suntory 10,000-person Symphony No. 9.
He has recorded numerous CDs, his latest being his 22nd CD, Mahler: Symphony No. 6, conducted by the Tonkünstler Orchestra, to be released in May 2025. His books include A Life of Waving a Baton: A Conductor Carves Time (PHP Bunko/Shinsho). He has received numerous awards, including the Idemitsu Music Prize (1991), the Montblanc International Cultural Prize (2003), the Akio Watanabe Music Foundation Music Award (2003), the Tokiko Iwatani Award (2014), the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Commendation (2024), and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Commendation (2025).
