In 1977 he won the Karajan Conductor's Competition Japan, and in 1984 he won the Hans Swarovski International Conductor Competition. Received the 50th Suntory Music Award. After working as an assistant to Herbert von Karajan in Berlin, he studied under Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa at the Tanglewood Music Festival, and in 1984 won the Hans Swarovski International Conducting Competition.
He has made many overseas guest appearances, including at the St. Petersburg Philharmonic's subscription concert where he drew out rich tones from world-renowned orchestras and was met with great acclaim from audiences and musicians alike. He is a master conductor who creates grand-scale music from meticulous analysis of scores, and has earned the trust of world-renowned soloists and composers such as Itzhak Perlman, Mischa Maisky, Pierre Boulez, and Gidon Kremer, and especially Martha Argerich, with whom he has performed three times.
In opera, Ikuma Dan's "Evening Crane" at the New National Theatre, Vladivostok and St. Petersburg, Britten's "Peter Grimes" at Osaka College Opera, and Stravinsky's "Yonaki Uguisu" and Tchaikovsky's "Yonaki Uguisu" at the New National Theater in 2021. Received the 4th Akeo Watanabe Music Foundation Music Award, the 10th Hideo Saito Memorial Fund Award, and the 50th Suntory Music Award. He continues to be active in a wide range of fields, including regular appearances on programs such as NHK.
