After working for 11 years as a founding member of Sado Ondekoza and Kodo, he began his solo career in 1982. As the first Japanese drum soloist, he has created an unprecedented expression of "taiko music" by inventing solo techniques, creating and directing stage works, and co-starring with orchestras, and is active both in Japan and overseas.
Performed in 54 countries, including Europe and America. In addition to performing at Carnegie Hall and with the Berliner Philharmoniker, he has also conducted his own concert tours. "Japonismes 2018" in Paris was a great success with tickets sold out. In addition, he was in charge of music for the official video of "Tokyo 2020 NIPPON Festival" sponsored by the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. etc.
He has composed many commissioned works for original taiko drums, and also teaches. There are many CDs, DVDs and videos. He is the author of the new and enlarged edition of "Tomorrow's Drumming" (released by Hatori Shoten in October 2017). His newly written autobiography, “Taiko Sun and Moon: Dokdo no Kiseki” (Kodansha), and many other manuscripts have been published in magazines.
He has served as a visiting professor at Tokyo University of the Arts and as a lecturer at the Graduate School of Tsukuba. Received the 1997 Minister of Education Award for Art Encouragement, the 2001 Japanese Traditional Culture Promotion Award, the 2017 Matsuo Performing Arts Grand Prize, and the 2021 JTS Hozan Yamamoto Memorial Award.
In 2021, he will celebrate his 50th anniversary as a soloist, and in Suntory Hall, he will celebrate his 40th anniversary as a soloist.
