Toshiaki Umeda, conductor

profile

1984 Graduated from Toho Gakuen University Music Department. Completed the graduate school in 1986. Studied conducting under Seiji Ozawa, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, and Tadaaki Otaka. In 1983 and 1984, he also studied with Jean Fournet. In 1986, he studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he studied under Othmar Suitner. After returning to Japan, he successively served as conductor of Japan Century, Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra and Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra.
Over the years, he has performed with major orchestras in Japan, including the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Yomiuri Nikkyo Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2000, he became the permanent conductor of the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra. Passionate about the development of the orchestra, he held that position until March 2006. In 2006, he participated in the drama "Nodame Cantabile", which became a big boom, as a performance and conducting guidance, and attracted attention. Not only in Japan, in 1996 he appeared in regular concerts of the Southwestern German Philharmonic and the Slovak Philharmonic, both of which were well received. With his accurate stick handling and sincere attitude towards music, he is deeply trusted by the orchestra. Part-time lecturer at Toho Gakuen University and Tokyo University of the Arts.
