Born in 1941. American Music Director Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Music Director (currently Conductor Laureate), Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Music Director, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra Music Director Permanent Conductor, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra Chief Conductor, Sapporo Symphony Orchestra Chief Conductor, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra Chief Conductor, Kyushu Symphony Orchestra Chief He has served as a conductor.  He has received the Suntory Music Award, the Watanabe Akio Music Foundation Special Prize, the Kawasaki City Culture Award, and the Mainichi Art Award, the Kyoto Music Grand Prize, and the Mobil Music Award with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2001 and the Order of the Rising Sun in 2011. In 2014, he was selected as a person of cultural merit, and received the Chinese Culture Award (Hiroshima) and the Tokushima Prefectural Commendation Special Achievement Award. Currently, he has served as artistic director and Chief conductor of the Chubu Philharmonic Orchestra, music advisor to the Japan Century Symphony Orchestra, conductor laureate of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, honorary conductor of the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, conductor laureate of the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, artistic director and special professor of Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, and visiting professor at Kyoto City University of Arts.
