Since his debut conducting the NHK Symphony Orchestra while attending Toho Gakuen School of Music, he has been one of Japan's leading conductors and has continued to lead the Japanese music scene.
He has served as the principal conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the exclusive conductor of the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, the principal conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the principal conductor of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, and Music Director of the Gunma Symphony Orchestra. He is currently the honorary guest conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the conductor laureate of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Ryukyu Symphony Orchestra, the artistic director of Takasaki Arts Theatre, and the music advisor of the Seto Philharmonic Orchestra.
As the first Music Director of the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, he laid the foundation for the Tokyo Music Competition, and has been frequently invited by overseas orchestras, including being a regular guest with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra for over 20 years.
He studied under Seiji Ozawa, Tadashi Mori, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Tadaaki Odaka, Morihiro Okabe, and others. During his time as a conducting researcher at the NHK Symphony Orchestra, he studied under W. Sawallisch, G. Wand, F. Leitner, H. Blomstedt, and H. Stein, and at the Tanglewood Music Center he also received instruction from L. Bernstein, A. Previn, and I. Markevitch.
Professor at Osaka University of Arts, specially appointed professor at Toho Gakuen College of Music, visiting professor at Kyoto City University of Arts and Senzoku Gakuen University.
