Born in Aachen, Germany in 1969, he studied music, German language, literature, and recorder at the University of Cologne. He then studied in Amsterdam and Milan, furthering his recorder studies. He studied under Günter Heller, Walter van Hauwe, and Pedro Memmelsdorff.
Currently, she is one of the world's most popular and talented virtuosos, and has been praised as a beautiful and gifted female recorder player. She won the SRP MEC International Recorder Competition in the UK in 1997 and made her debut at London's Wigmore Hall the following year. She is a regular at prestigious music festivals and concert series throughout Europe. Her vivid virtuosity, backed by high artistry and stunning technique, creates music that can be described as unrivaled and flawless. Since 2004, she has taught at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where she currently serves as head of the Early Music Department.
In addition to his solo activities, he has performed with many of Europe's renowned baroque orchestras, including Musica Antiqua Köln, London Baroque, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Academy of Early Music Berlin, and in 2002 he founded his own ensemble, Ensemble 1700.
In recent years, the scope of his musical activities has expanded, and he made his conducting debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2011. In 2016, he was appointed "Telemann Ambassador" by German cities with close ties to the composer Telemann. In July 2018, he became Music Director of the Ludwigzburg Festival in Germany, leading the Ensemble 1700 and conducting Handel's opera "Lucio Silla." He is set to become Music Director of the Potsdam Festival from 2019.
He is also an active recording artist, having released 18 albums since 2001 on labels such as Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and Sony Music, and has received the prestigious German Echo Klassik Award and the French Diapason d'Or.
