Yutaka Sado Appointed New Japan Philharmonic Music Director and Music Advisor

New Japan Philharmonic is pleased to announce the appointment of conductor Yutaka Sado as its fifth Music Director. The term of office will be four years from April 2023 to March 2027, and prior to that, for one year from April 2022, you will be involved in programming for New Japan Philharmonic concerts as a music advisor.

In May 1961, Mr. Sado, who was born in Kyoto, studied under the late Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa, the founder and Conductor Laureate / Emeritus of the New Japan Philharmonic. He currently serves as Music Director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Austria, Artistic Director of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center, and Chief Conductor of the Siena Wind Orchestra. He has performed as a guest with many of the world's leading orchestras, mainly in Europe, such as the Symphony Orchestra and the Santa Cecilia National Orchestra of Rome.

He co-starred with the New Japan Philharmonic for the first time in February 1988, and also co-starred in his first domestic debut concert after winning the 1989 Besançon International Conductor Competition (January 1990, Orchard Hall). After that, from September 1992 to July 1995, he served as a "conductor", boasting a history of more than 90 co-stars.

In the future, during the 50th anniversary of the New Japan Philharmonic, it has been decided to appear in the "Sumida Classic Door" in January 2022 and the "Triphony Hall & Suntory Hall Series" in May.

Yutaka Sado appointed as Music Director and Music Adviser of the New Japan Philharmonic

The New Japan Philharmonic Foundation (Sumida-ku, Tokyo, Chairman Yoshihiko Miyauchi, hereinafter referred to as the New Japan Philharmonic) appointed Yutaka Sado as the fifth Music Director. The four-year term will start in April 2023 until March 2027, and prior to that, he will be involved in concert programming for the orchestra as the Music Adviser for one year from April 2022.

Born in Kyoto in May 1961, Maestro Sado studied under the late Leonard Bernstein, and Seiji Ozawa, the founder and the honorary conductor of the New Japan Philharmonic. He is currently the music director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Austria, the artistic director of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center, and the principal conductor of the Siena Wind Orchestra. Maestro Sado has guest-conducted world's renowned orchestras centering in Europe, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and L'Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

Maestro Sado first stepped onto the New Japan Philharmonic podium in February 1988. He made his first domestic debut with the orchestra in January 1990 (Orchard Hall), after winning the Grand Prize of the Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors in 1989. He served as the “conductor” of the New Japan Philharmonic and conducted over 90 performances from September 1992 until July 1995.

Maestro Sado will appear during the celebration of 50th anniversary of the New Japan Philharmonic including “Doors of Sumida Classic” in January 2022 and in the “Triphony Hall & Suntory Hall Series” in May 2022.

Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts. Studied under the late Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. In 1989, he won the Besançon Conducting Competition. In 1995, he won the 1st Leonard Bernstein Jerusalem International Conducting Competition.
He has performed with the Orchester de Paris, the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the London Symphony Orchestra, the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra (currently the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra), etc. He has performed with many of Europe's leading orchestras. In 2015, he became the Music Director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra, which has a history of more than 110 years and represents Austria, and has been active in Vienna based in Europe. He has performed many operas overseas, including Madame Butterfly at the Orange Music Festival (performed by Orchester de la Suisse Romande), Turin Royal Opera "Peter Grimes," "Carmen," and "The Marriage of Figaro."
In Japan, he is the artistic director of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center and the Chief conductor of the Siena Wind Orchestra. There are many CD releases, and the latest release is the 17th CD "Brahms: Symphony No. 2/Variations on a theme of Haydn", which conducted the Tonkünstler Orchestra, in August 2021. His publications include "How I Became a Conductor" (Shincho Bunko) and "Life with a Stick - A Conductor Carves Time" (PHP Bunko/Shinsho).
From April 2022, he will be appointed Music Advisor of the New Japan Philharmonic and from April 2023, he will be Music Director of the same orchestra.
