[Obituary] Regarding the passing of Mr. Soichi Minegishi (Honorary Chief Flute)

Mr. Soichi Minegishi, who participated in the establishment of New Japan Philharmonic in 1972 and served as Chief flutist for many years, passed away on July 24, 2023. He was 90 years old.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and condolences for the contributions of Mr. Minegishi during his lifetime.

The funeral was held on July 27th with only close relatives.

A memorial service will be held at a later date, hosted by the Minegishi-kai (discipline group).

Profile of Soichi Minegishi

Chief of New Japan Philharmonic, Professor Emeritus of the Toho Gakuen University Music Department, Honorary President of the Japan Flute Association.
He spread the appeal of the flute to society through performance activities as an orchestra player and soloist, lecturer on NHK TV's "Flute Together", and performances on FM broadcasts and TV commercials. In addition, he had active exchanges with musicians from all over the world, served as a permanent director of the Japan Federation of Musicians, and contributed to raising not only the flute world but also the Japanese music world to an international level.
Born in Tokyo in 1932. Studied flute under Ririko Hayashi. After graduating from Keio University in 1955, he joined the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra (since 1951, he has been a researcher at the orchestra). In 1956, he participated in the establishment of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and served as Chief player. In 1962, he participated in the Marlboro Music Festival in the United States and studied under Marcel Moyse. In 1972, he participated in the establishment of New Japan Philharmonic and served as Chief player for many years.
In 1988, he made a presentation at the International Otolaryngological Society on "Glottal dynamics during blowing".
From 2005 to 2011, he served as president of the Japan Flute Association.
He has served as a member and judge of many competitions such as the Kobe International Flute Competition, the Geneva International Competition, the Munich International Competition, and the Japan Music Competition. Contributed to the establishment of the Japan Woodwind Competition.
From 1968 to 2009, he taught at Toho Gakuen College of Music, and from 1972 to 1988, he taught at Tokyo College of Music.
Passed away on July 24, 2023 at the age of 90.
